The presentation of these spatial and mental journeys combines the languages of film, photography and painting. The paintings refer to film in a number of ways. I employ filmic devices such as close-ups, tilt-ups or pan-shots in the paintings to suggest my movement through these spaces. Furthermore, the paintings are like scenic backdrops through which I (and then the viewer) metaphorically move. The paintings also deal with notions of filmic time. I depict both the "real time" of moving through a space combined with filmic representations of slow or fast motion. The paintings function like film frames or even like a storyboard. In addition, the "snap-shot" like compositions reference the language of photography, yet the paint application contradicts the seamless quality of photo-realism. Heavy and "chunky", the surfaces maintain a painterly quality.
